Bhubaneswar, 11 October (H.S.): In a significant boost to Odisha’s fisheries sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday virtually laid the foundation stone for eastern India’s largest and most modern fish market at Pandara in Bhubaneswar.

Spanning across 5 acres, the upcoming market aims to resolve the longstanding issues of inadequate infrastructure and congestion at the existing No. 4 wholesale fish market. The new facility will offer an integrated platform for wholesale and retail fish trade, equipped with advanced amenities such as cold storage, solar power systems, and dedicated trader houses.

The project, being implemented under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) with a central allocation of ₹50 crore, is estimated to cost between ₹60 crore and ₹80 crore in total. Once completed, it will serve as a modern hub for the fish trade in eastern India.

“This initiative is not just about developing infrastructure; it is about empowering everyone involved — from fish farmers and traders to consumers,” said Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi while addressing the event.

The market will feature 143 shops and is projected to create indirect employment opportunities for more than 2,000 people. The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) will oversee its execution, with completion targeted for 2027.

Odisha, known for its abundant fishery resources, has long relied on supplies from other states to meet local demand. The new market, coupled with the state’s ongoing efforts to promote bio-flock technology and home-based aquaculture, is expected to enhance local production and reduce dependence on imports from other regions, the Chief Minister added.
