Massive Seizure in Sonari, Police Nab 3 with Burmese Supari

Charaideo (Assam), 11 October (HS): In a major breakthrough against the growing menace of illegal trade, Sonari Police seized a massive consignment of Burmese supari (areca nuts) worth several lakhs of rupees in a covert smuggling attempt. The operation took place on the Assam-Nagaland connecting road, exposing a sophisticated network allegedly involved in the illegal trade.

According to police sources, the contraband was being transported in a cargo vehicle bearing registration number AS-28AC-0916. The smugglers had cleverly disguised the vehicle to make it appear as though it was carrying legitimate goods. Acting on a tip-off, a team of Sonari police intercepted the truck and discovered nearly four tonnes of Burmese supari, concealed within, and valued at several lakhs in the black market.

During the operation, police arrested three individuals. Two of them have been identified as Sabbir Islam and Moidul Islam, both residents of Barpeta district. Preliminary investigations suggest that the supari was being transported from Manipur to Barpeta for further distribution within Assam.

The seizure underscores the growing presence of an underground Burmese supari syndicate operating across different regions of the state. Officials note that the illegal trade has seen a surge in recent years due to its high profitability.

Police have launched a detailed investigation to trace the broader network behind the smuggling racket. Authorities have assured stringent action against all those involved.

The Sonari police team has earned widespread appreciation for their vigilance and swift action, which successfully prevented a large volume of illegal goods from entering the market.
