BJP Alleges Durgapur Gangrape Probe Being Mishandled Like RG Kar Case

Kolkata, 11 October (H.S.) — The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday accused the West Bengal Police of mishandling the investigation into the gangrape of a medical student from Odisha in Durgapur, comparing it to the alleged irregularities in the probe of last year’s RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case in Kolkata.

BJP’s IT cell head and the party’s co-incharge for West Bengal, Amit Malviya, shared two posts on social media holding the state government responsible for what he called a “pattern of cover-ups” in cases involving crimes against women.

Malviya said that during the RG Kar incident, the Kolkata Police had diverted the investigation under political pressure from the state government. He urged the authorities to ensure a transparent and impartial probe into the Durgapur case so that the culprits receive strict punishment under the law.

He stated, “The repeated collapse of law and order under Mamata Banerjee’s regime is deeply concerning. The West Bengal Police must conduct a transparent investigation this time, unlike what happened in the RG Kar rape and murder case, where Kolkata Police manipulated the probe under government instructions.”

It may be recalled that the RG Kar Medical College case was initially investigated by the Kolkata Police, but the Calcutta High Court later transferred it to the CBI following allegations of evidence tampering and political interference.

Malviya also mentioned that a complaint has been lodged against Wasif Ali and his associates in connection with the Durgapur gangrape incident, and he demanded accountability from the ruling Trinamool Congress government.

“The state of West Bengal has become unsafe for women. Until the Trinamool Congress government is held accountable, women will continue to live in fear. Mamata Banerjee must go in 2026,” he asserted.

Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Education and former BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar also condemned the incident, saying it reflects the complete breakdown of women’s safety in the state.

Majumdar said, “Under Mamata Banerjee’s failed and lawless governance, West Bengal has become one of the most dangerous places for women. From villages to cities, hospitals to homes — women are unsafe everywhere. The politics of appeasement has crippled police investigations, giving criminals a free hand. Mamata Banerjee has turned Bengal into a safe haven for rapists and criminals.”
