Lt Gen Virendra Vats Appointed Director General of National Cadet Corps Amid Expansion Drive


Delhi, 1 October (H.S.): Lt Gen Virendra Vats assumed charge as the Director General of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) on October 1, 2025, succeeding Lt Gen Gurbirpal Singh. His appointment comes at a pivotal time as the NCC, the world’s largest uniformed youth organisation, embarks on a strategic expansion to increase its cadet strength to 20 lakh across 28 States and 8 Union Territories.

Upholding its motto of Unity and Discipline, the NCC is continuously evolving in sync with the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047 by integrating innovation, digital skills, and global awareness alongside its traditional emphasis on character building and patriotism.

Commissioned into the 19 KUMAON Regiment on December 17, 1988, Lt Gen Virendra Vats brings 37 years of exemplary military service. His distinguished career includes extensive operational experience in demanding Counter Insurgency and Counter Terrorism environments across Arunachal Pradesh, Kashmir Valley, and Army Headquarters.

Notably, he commanded an Infantry Brigade during a United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Before this appointment, he served as the Commandant of the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington.

An alumnus of premier defence institutions including the National Defence Academy, Indian Military Academy, College of Defence Management, and the National Defence College, Lt Gen Vats combines vast operational expertise with strategic leadership. His vision is expected to invigorate the NCC, reinforcing its mission to mould disciplined, responsible, and future-ready youth who are well-equipped to contribute to the nation’s development and security.
