Kolkata, 1 October (H.S.): Kolkata Police on Wednesday morning confirmed the arrest of four individuals, including a restaurant owner, in connection with the brutal assault on an Intelligence Department officer in Howrah district.
According to police officials, the incident occurred on Tuesday at a residential complex on S.N. Ganguly Road under Chatterjeehat Police Station limits. A scuffle broke out over the entry of restaurant employees into the complex, during which Intelligence Department Sub-Inspector Amit Kumar Singh was allegedly attacked by outsiders brought in by local resident and restaurant owner, Manas Roy.
The officer, who sustained serious injuries, has been admitted to hospital. His wife told reporters that she too was assaulted during the attack. “Some employees of Manas Roy’s restaurant live here. For security reasons, they were asked to provide their identity details. When they were asked for IDs in the morning, an argument began. Later, Manas Roy brought in outsiders and attacked. My husband was seriously injured, and I was also beaten,” she alleged.
Police sources said a complaint was lodged soon after the incident, and CCTV footage from the area was examined. Based on the findings, four accused, including Roy, were arrested. A case has been registered against them under several non-bailable sections, including attempt to murder and molestation.
A senior Howrah Police officer confirmed, “Four persons have been arrested on the basis of the complaint that a Kolkata Police Intelligence Department officer was beaten up following a dispute. A case has been registered under relevant sections, and investigation has begun.”
Meanwhile, the family of the accused has alleged that the officer initiated the violence. “The police officer beat up our restaurant workers. That’s what started the argument. We will also file a complaint against him,” said Tuhin Roy, nephew of the prime accused.
Police have tightened security in the area as the investigation continues.
