Delhi, 1 October (H.S.): Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh has strongly objected to the recent praise by US President Donald Trump for Pakistani Field Marshal Asim Munir. He described Trump’s remarks as a serious challenge to India’s foreign policy, emphasizing that mere sloganeering will no longer suffice amidst the complex geopolitical landscape.
Ramesh shared a 53-second video of Trump’s statement in an ex-post message on social media, highlighting Trump’s repeated admiration for Munir, whose inflammatory and communal remarks had allegedly set the backdrop for the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22. Ramesh expressed concern over the public commendation of such a figure.
Pointing out that Trump has met Munir twice in the past three months, and recently publicly praised Munir’s efforts to halt the India-Pakistan conflict in May, Ramesh noted that Trump’s White House Chief of Staff had described Munir’s tribute as “a very beautiful thing.” He underscored that Indian diplomacy needs to move beyond rhetoric and face the multifaceted challenges posed not only by the United States but other nations as well.
In the video, Trump claimed that the situation between India and Pakistan had been intense for four days but was stopped by his intervention. He recalled that the Pakistani Prime Minister and Field Marshal Munir had met him three days prior and praised his role in saving millions of lives by preventing the escalation of a war.
