Tokyo, October 1 (HS):World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz of Spain has withdrawn from this week’s Rolex Shanghai Masters, citing physical issues. The announcement came just hours after he clinched the Japan Open title in Tokyo.
In a social media statement, the newly crowned US Open champion said, “I’m very disappointed to announce that I won’t be able to play the Rolex Shanghai Masters this year. Unfortunately, I am dealing with some physical problems and, after discussions with my team, we decided it is best to rest and recover.”Alcaraz added that he had been looking forward to competing in front of his Chinese fans. “I was excited to play in Shanghai’s amazing atmosphere. Hopefully, I’ll be back soon and see my Chinese supporters next year.”
The 22-year-old Spaniard suffered an ankle injury in his opening match at the Japan Open but continued playing with heavy strapping. Despite the setback, he went on to defeat American Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 in the final to secure his eighth title of the season.
Reflecting on his win in Tokyo, Alcaraz said, “The week started with difficulties because of my ankle, but the way I came back and played great matches makes me very happy.”
