Cebu, October 1(HS): A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the island of Cebu in the central Philippines late Tuesday, killing at least 60 people and injuring more than 100. The tremor, which hit near the northern city of Bogo at 9:59 pm local time, caused building collapses, landslides, and widespread destruction.

Up to 60 people are reported killed so far, Office of Civil Defence deputy administrator Rafaelito Alejandro said.

Rescue teams worked through the night despite aftershocks and power disruptions. Authorities said medical volunteers were urgently needed, while power supply in many areas was gradually restored by Wednesday morning.Eyewitness footage showed collapsed structures, including the bell tower of a historic Catholic church on Bantayan Island.

Dozens of homes and public buildings across Cebu City also sustained heavy damage.The Philippines sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” making it prone to frequent earthquakes.

Officials warned that the death toll could rise as search and recovery efforts continue.
