Tremor felt in Indonesia at 7.1 at Richter scale


New Delhi, Nov 15 (HS): The northern Maluku coast in the eastern part of Indonesia trembled with the earthquake on Friday. The earthquake was very powerful and its intensity was measured at 7.1 on the Richter scale. The American Tsunami Warning Center said that a tsunami was not expected.

The tremors of the earthquake that occurred late at 1.17 am a local time was so intense that the sleeping people came out of their homes in panic. According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was 140 kilometers northwest of the coastal city of Ternate.

The American Tsunami Warning Center has dismissed the possibility of a devastating tsunami, saying that it is unlikely. At the same time, the Indonesian Meteorological Center has issued a warning to people to stay away from the beach. The Meteorological Center has taken this step as a precaution.

Earthquake tremors were felt on Nicobar island of India at 12.01 minutes late on Thursday night. According to the Indian Meteorological Center, earthquake intensity was measured 5.0 on the Rector scale.

Indonesia is constantly battling earthquakes and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collide. Last September too, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Palau of Sulawesi Island. Then more than 2200 people were killed and more than 1000 people went missing from the tsunami that followed the earthquake.
