Nagaon (Assam), 09 June (HS): The Food Safety Department conducted a surprise inspection at Borbazar in Assam's Nagaon district on Tuesday and seized several quintals of bananas during the operation.

Officials also recovered banned calcium carbide, a chemical allegedly being used to artificially ripen the fruits. The substance is prohibited due to its harmful effects on human health.

The raid was carried out as part of an ongoing drive against the use of unsafe chemicals in food products. Authorities said the seized bananas and the recovered chemical have been taken into custody for further examination.

The department has initiated necessary action against those involved and reiterated its commitment to ensuring food safety and protecting consumers from hazardous food practices.----------
