Shillong, 09 June (HS): Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday flagged off a fleet of 55 electric buses under the PM e-Bus Sewa scheme, marking a significant step towards sustainable, accessible and modern public transportation in the state.
Describing the initiative as a major boost to green mobility, the Chief Minister said the project would strengthen Meghalaya’s public transport infrastructure while promoting environmentally friendly and inclusive commuting options. He noted that the scheme aligns with the state’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and enhance urban transport services.
The fleet comprises 25 nine-metre electric buses with a seating capacity of 27 passengers each and 30 seven-metre buses capable of carrying 22 passengers each. The buses are designed to operate over distances exceeding 150 kilometres on a single charge and are equipped with wheelchair-accessibility features to ensure convenient travel for persons with disabilities and other passengers requiring assistance.
Sangma said the introduction of the electric buses reflects the government’s commitment to cleaner, smarter and more efficient mobility solutions. He added that the initiative would contribute significantly to the state’s long-term sustainability goals while improving the quality of public transport.
As part of the project, a dedicated e-bus depot is being developed at Umsawli to support the operation, charging and maintenance of the electric bus fleet.
The launch is being viewed as a major milestone in Meghalaya’s transition towards modern urban mobility, with the state aiming to expand sustainable transport infrastructure and provide efficient, eco-friendly services to residents.---------
