- Investors' Wealth Increases by ₹37,000 Crore Despite Market Weakness

New Delhi, May 05 (HS) : Due to renewed concerns about rising tensions in West Asia, surging crude oil prices, and the rupee hitting a record low, domestic stock markets today appeared to trade under pressure. The impact of today being the expiry day for Nifty index derivative contracts was also clearly visible in the market. Trading for the day began with weakness. After the market opened, selling began, causing both the Sensex and Nifty indices to decline continuously.

In the second session of the day, buyers sustained buying pressure, enabling both indices to recover significantly from their lows. However, despite the buying by buyers, both indices remained in the negative territory throughout. After a full day of trading, Sensex closed with a 0.33% decline and Nifty with a 0.34% decline.

During the day's trading, shares in automobile, power, telecom, and FMCG sectors saw continuous buying. Similarly, IT, capital goods, and healthcare indices also closed in the green with strength. On the other hand, banking, consumer durable, metal, oil and gas, tech, and public sector enterprise indices closed in the red with a decline.

In the broader market, buying activity was generally seen today, causing the BSE Midcap Index to close with a 0.17% strength. Similarly, the Smallcap Index ended today's trading with a 0.28% gain.

Despite the weakness seen in the stock market today, buying in midcap and smallcap shares led to an increase of over ₹35,000 crore in stock market investors' wealth. The market capitalization of companies listed on BSE increased to ₹466.88 lakh crore (provisional) after today's trading. While on the previous trading day, Monday, their market capitalization was ₹466.351 lakh crore. Thus, investors gained approximately ₹37,000 crore from today's trading.

Today, active trading took place in 4,355 shares on BSE. Of these, 1,998 shares closed with gains, while 2,181 shares showed a decline, and 176 shares closed without any fluctuation. On NSE, active trading took place in 2,981 shares today. Of these, 1,360 shares closed in the green earning profit, and 1,621 shares closed in the red suffering losses. Similarly, of the 30 shares included in Sensex, 12 shares closed with gains and 18 shares closed with a decline. While of the 50 shares included in Nifty, 17 shares closed in the green and 33 shares closed in the red.

BSE's Sensex opened today at 77,103.72 points with a weakness of 165.68 points. Shortly after trading began, selling pressure built up in the market, causing the index to fall by 754.37 points to 76,515.03 points a little before noon. After this, buyers sustained buying pressure, causing the Sensex movement to improve. Supported by continuous buying, the index managed to recover more than 635 points from its low and reach 77,151.33 points. However, in the end, selling pressure built up once again, causing Sensex to slip more than 130 points from the day's high and close at 77,017.79 points with a decline of 251.61 points.

Like Sensex, NSE's Nifty today opened trading by falling 66.70 points to 24,052.60 points. After the market opened, the index's movement fluctuated for some time. After that, under selling pressure, the index's movement declined. Due to continuous selling, Nifty around noon fell by 237.25 points to 23,882.05 points.

After this, buyers sustained buying pressure, causing the index's movement to improve. Supported by continuous buying, shortly before the day's trading ended, this index managed to recover approximately 200 points from its low and reach 24,081.70 points. However, in the end, selling pressure built up once again, causing Nifty to fall approximately 50 points from the day's high and close at 24,032.80 points with a weakness of 86.50 points.

After today's day-long buying and selling, among top stock market shares, Mahindra & Mahindra 3.36%, UltraTech Cement 1.74%, Nestle 1.42%, Bajaj Finserv 1.37%, and Hindalco Industries 1.15% were included in today's top 5 gainers list with strength. On the other hand, Jio Financial 1.70%, ICICI Bank 1.53%, Coal India 1.53%, Eternity 1.36%, and Tech Mahindra 1.32% were included in today's top 5 losers list with weakness.
