Malmo, 05 May (H.S.): In the TePe Sigeman Chess Tournament 2026, world chess legend Magnus Carlsen faced defeat in classical format after nearly one year. In the fourth round, he was defeated by Jorden van Foreest.
Carlsen had been unbeaten since losing to D. Gukesh in Norway Chess 2025. In this match, van Foreest maintained the lead from the beginning and didn't give Carlsen a chance to make a comeback. Finally, when his knight got trapped, Carlsen accepted defeat.
Van Foreest said after the match that he never thought he would win. He said he was prepared for a draw, but suddenly the game went in his favor and the situation changed. He also described it as an extremely interesting match .
Meanwhile, India's Arjun Erigaisi played a draw with Nodirbek Abdusattorov. Earlier, Arjun had defeated Nils Grandelius. With this draw, Arjun, Abdusattorov, and van Foreest remain jointly in second position.
Arjun tried to win the match, but in the end both players shared points. In the next round, Arjun will face Jorden van Foreest, while Abdusattorov will play against Nils Grandelius.
Nils Grandelius's performance in the tournament has been disappointing and he faced continuous fourth defeat. Meanwhile, Zhu Jiner recorded her first victory by defeating Andy Woodward.
Carlsen's last classical loss before this was in Norway Chess 2025 against Gukesh, making him undefeated in classical chess for nearly a year until van Foreest outplayed him in a complicated multi-piece ending. The tournament is being held in Malmo and features top grandmasters competing for the prestigious title.
