New Delhi, May 24 (H.S.): New Delhi Municipal Council Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal said that the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” (One Tree in Mother’s Name) campaign is not merely an environmental conservation initiative, but a mass movement linked to emotional and social responsibility. He stated that planting a tree is akin to laying the foundation for a secure future for coming generations and also serves as a gesture of respect towards both mothers and nature.
Chahal on Sunday led a plantation drive under the campaign at the NDMC housing complex “Amrit Kaal Niwas” in Jor Bagh. Local residents, Resident Welfare Association (RWA) members, officials, and employees participated in the programme and planted saplings in the names of their mothers.
He said that the NDMC has continued the campaign uninterrupted for 25 consecutive weeks without missing a single Sunday.
Chahal further stated that apart from the weekly plantation programmes, the NDMC is also conducting plantation drives in collaboration with various universities, embassies, and other institutions. He said the initiative aims to make New Delhi greener, cleaner, and more environmentally sustainable through active public participation.
According to Chahal, the NDMC has prepared a year-long green calendar under which plantation drives will be organised every Sunday across different parts of New Delhi.
He added that the horticulture, health, civil engineering, sanitation, roads, water supply, drainage, and electricity departments will jointly ensure the proper maintenance and care of the saplings planted during the campaign.
Chahal also announced that the NDMC will organise a special plantation programme on June 5 to mark World Environment Day.
