New Delhi, 24 May (H.S.): New Zealand women's national cricket team strengthened their preparations for the upcoming ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 with an impressive 14-run victory over England women's national cricket team in the second T20 International played in Canterbury, leveling the three-match series 1-1.

Veteran all-rounder Sophie Devine played a decisive role in New Zealand’s victory. The 36-year-old star produced a commanding innings of 87 runs off 57 deliveries, registering her highest-ever T20I score against England.

According to the International Cricket Council, the victory came as a major boost for New Zealand after suffering a seven-wicket defeat in the opening match of the series. With the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 scheduled to be held in England, the win is expected to provide the team with significant confidence ahead of the global tournament.

Devine’s return to form is particularly important for New Zealand, as the experienced cricketer has already announced that she will retire from international cricket following the conclusion of the World Cup. She will be aiming to end her illustrious career by helping New Zealand secure a second Women’s T20 World Cup title.

In the second T20I, Sophie Devine shared a crucial 159-run partnership with Maddy Green, who remained unbeaten on 56, guiding New Zealand to a competitive total of 170 for five in 20 overs.

In reply, England women's national cricket team managed 156 for six in their allotted 20 overs and fell short by 14 runs.

The third and deciding T20I between the two sides will be played on May 25. As for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026, the tournament is scheduled to begin on June 12, with New Zealand set to face West Indies women's national cricket team in their opening match in Southampton on June 13.
