Guwahati, 03 March (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced that Rajya Sabha MP Rameswar Teli will contest from the Duliajan Assembly constituency in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.

Speaking to reporters in Kaziranga, the Chief Minister confirmed that Teli would replace sitting MLA Terash Gowalla as the party’s candidate from Duliajan. He also stated that the BJP would field a separate candidate from the Mahmora constituency. “As much as I believe, in place of Terash Gowala, Rameswar Teli will be contesting from Duliajan constituency,” Sarma said, putting speculation over the seat to rest.

Responding to queries about the exclusion of newly inducted former AASU leader Sankarjyoti Baruah from the party’s ticket list, Sarma clarified that he had already informed Baruah that he would not be fielded in the upcoming elections. He emphasized that there was complete clarity within the party regarding candidate selection.

Meanwhile, the BJP has also announced its nominees for the 2026 Rajya Sabha elections. From Assam, Terash Gowala and Jogen Mohan have been named as candidates for the Upper House.

The announcements signal the BJP’s early groundwork and strategic positioning for the 2026 electoral cycle in Assam and other states.--------
