Varanasi,
7 Dec (HS): The Varanasi Police Commissionerate has initiated a week-long
special verification campaign targeting Bangladeshis, Rohingyas, and other
illegal immigrants living in the area, authorities said on Sunday. Gaurav
Banswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for the Kashi Zone, said teams
have been dispatched around Varanasi to identify those living in temporary
settlements or operating as hawkers without proper documentation. The week-long
initiative, which began on Saturday, aims to track out people living unlawfully
and prosecute them under applicable laws, he added. During the seven-day
verification campaign, police officers inspect hutment clusters and roadside
merchants. Individuals discovered to be
residing unlawfully would face harsh and effective legal action under the laws,
according to Banswal.
All
station house officers in the district have organized special teams to
undertake thorough inspections in their respective areas. On Saturday,
Additional DCP Gomti Zone Vaibhav Bangar oversaw a special verification
operation in Koirajpur. Teams investigated the names, backgrounds, and papers
of hutment residents, hawkers, and other suspicious persons.
According
to police officials, pictures and detailed personal information for each person
examined were recorded on designated forms. The campaign has been conducted
with heightened vigilance by teams from the Baragaon police station and other
Gomti Zone units. A
special verification exercise is being carried out systematically throughout
all police station areas under the Varanasi Police Commissionerate.
