UNITED NATIONS, 14 November (H.S.): The United States on Thursday formally called upon the UN Security Council to unify in support of its draft resolution, which is designed to advance President Donald Trump's comprehensive peace plan for Gaza.

A spokesperson for the US mission to the UN warned that failure to do so could result in grave, tangible, and entirely avoidable consequences for Palestinians in Gaza. The American-authored draft resolution, which follows a fragile ceasefire in the two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas, seeks to establish a Board of Peace.

This transitional governing body for Gaza would theoretically be chaired by Trump and operate until the end of 2027. The proposal also authorizes the formation of a temporary International Stabilization Force (ISF) to secure border areas, demilitarize the Gaza Strip, and protect humanitarian aid corridors in cooperation with Israel, Egypt, and newly trained Palestinian police.

While US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed optimism about the resolution's adoption, diplomats have raised concerns. Key issues include the apparent lack of a mechanism for Security Council oversight, ambiguity regarding the future role of the Palestinian Authority, and insufficient detail on the ISF's mandate.

Notably, the most recent version of the draft includes a conditional pathway to Palestinian statehood, contingent upon reforms within the Palestinian Authority and the successful rebuilding of Gaza.
