Seoul, 14 November (H.S.): North Korea's Foreign Minister, Choe Son Hui, has strongly condemned a joint statement from the G7 nations calling for the complete denuclearization of her country, labeling it a disguised hostile act. The G7 statement, issued after a foreign ministers' meeting in Niagara, Canada, on November 12, 2025, reaffirmed the group's commitment to the complete denuclearisation of North Korea and condemned its nuclear weapons program.

G7's Call for Denuclearization

The foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) countries—Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States—held a meeting in Niagara, Canada, on November 11-12, 2025. In a joint statement, the ministers strongly condemned North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs and reaffirmed their commitment to the complete denuclearization of North Korea in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions.

The G7 also expressed grave concern over Pyongyang’s cryptocurrency thefts and urged a swift resolution to the issue of abductions.

North Korea's Vehement Rejection

In a statement carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui asserted that the G7's demand disregards North Korea's constitution. She stated, In the present grim geopolitical environment, the possession of nukes is the most correct option to deter the most dangerous and hostile states.

Choe also characterized the G7 as a nuclear alliance and said that their call for denuclearization is an inertia of thought because the international community understands its impossibility.

Constitutional Basis for Nuclear Status

North Korea amended its constitution in September 2023 to enshrine its status as a nuclear power, a move that leader Kim Jong Un declared would make its nuclear status irreversible. The amended constitution makes the country's nuclear force-building policy a permanent basic law, which no one is allowed to flout.

The constitution now states that North Korea develops highly nuclear weapons to ensure its rights to existence and to deter war. The law also grants the country's leader, Kim Jong Un, the sole authority to launch nuclear weapons and specifies that a nuclear strike will be conducted automatically if the country's leadership is targeted.
