Ranchi, 28 June (HS): Three players from Jharkhand namely Nikki Pradhan Salima Tete and Sangeeta Kumari have been selected for the FIH Women's Hockey World Cup scheduled in the Netherlands and Spain from July 1 to 17.
According to Hockey Jharkhand vice-president Manoj Konbegi, it is for the first time in the history of Jharkhand that the Indian women's hockey team will play in the World Cup.
A total of 16 teams are participating in this tournament and are divided into four bridges. The team India is in Pool B along with England, New Zealand, and China.
Notably, Nikki Pradhan from Khunti district has played in two Olympics and Salima Tete from Simdega has played for the Indian team in the Tokyo Olympics last year and both the players were the first and second female hockey players from Jharkhand to play in the Olympics.
Sangeeta Kumari who also hails from Simdega has represented the Indian women's hockey team.
Bholanath Singh, president of Hockey Jharkhand, quoted it as a moment of pride. Similarly, if our coaches and union officials continue to work hard, more players will be seen in the Indian team in the coming days, he added.
