Lucknow, 25 May (HS): True to its promise of timely payment of cane dues during recent state elections , the Uttar Pradesh government has made a record payment of more than Rs 1.73 lakh crores to farmers from the crushing session 2017-18 to date. The fact that the crop is farmed by around 65 lakh farmers in the state and the sugar business directly sustains over 45 lakh families demonstrates the importance of the sugar sector in UP. Sugarcane is often regarded as the state's economic backbone. The state government has traditionally prioritised paying cane prices to state farmers. The state government's procurement is consistently beating previous decades' records.
From 2017 to May 2022, over 45.74 lakh sugarcane farmers in UP received a record cane price payment of more than Rs 1,73,668.68 crore, demonstrating the government's pro-farmer stance. The payout is more than three times that of the previous Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) government and more than 1.5 times that of the Samajwadi Party (SP) government. The department is also working to enhance sugarcane yield from 81.5 tonnes per hectare to 84 tonnes per hectare over the next five years. The CM has previously stated that sugarcane price payments should be given to farmers without delay within 14 days. Sugarcane survey policy has been established for the crushing season 2022-23, as have instructions for conducting the digital survey.
