Crack in Shastri bridge pillar panel, traffic hit

PRAYAGRAJ, Jan 25 (HS): A road built on Shastri Bridge pillar number 14 developed a crack when a roller bearing from the pillar fell into the river, causing a severe traffic bottleneck. As a result, at least a five-inch gap between two panels was visible, causing traffic mayhem from early in the morning until late in the night on Monday. Traffic was restricted on the Prayagraj-Varanasi highway, and vehicles were allowed to pass from another lane. However, it resulted in a severe traffic jam on the bridge until it reached Andawa in Jhunsi. Soon after the crack was found, police notified PWD officials, who dispatched PWD engineer Yashwant and his team to the location. The team extracted the roller bearing from the river and began the process of reinstalling it.

Singh stated that the roller bearing will be installed temporarily, but that traffic would be halted for at least two days to allow for the repair of the gap in the pillar and the reinstallation of the roller bearing. According to the engineer, the bridge was built to support a load of 40 to 50 tonnes. However, heavy vehicles carrying 90 to 100 tonnes of stones, sand, and other materials caused the roller bearing to shift from its original location. A private firm began construction of the 2.32-kilometer-long Shastri bridge on GT Road in 1966-67, but abandoned the project after seven years. Bridge Corporation of India finished the balance of the construction, and the bridge opened to the public in 1980. The old bridge, on the other hand, has become deteriorated.
