Lucknow,14 January (H.S) :Swami Prasad Maurya, a former Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister and prominent OBC leader, joined the Samajwadi Party on Friday, along with another rebel minister, Dharam Singh Saini.
In the presence of Akhilesh Yadav, five BJP MLAs and Apna Dal (Sonelal) legislator Amar Singh Chaudhary joined the SP. The developments appear to be strengthening the SP's hold on the state's non-Yadav OBCs, less than a month before crucial elections that will also have an impact on the 2024 parliamentary elections.
Bhagwati Sagar (Bilhaur in Kanpur), Roshanlal Verma (Tilhar in Shahjahanpur), Vinay Shakya (Bidhuna in Auraiya), Brijesh Prajapati (Tindwari in Bahraich), and Mukesh Verma are the five BJP MLAs who have joined the SP (Shikohabad in Firozabad).
In poll-bound Uttar Pradesh, the resignation of state Labour Minister Maurya came as a shock to the ruling BJP.
A seven-phase election in Uttar Pradesh is set to begin on February 10.
