Kolkata, 09 June (H.S.) : Former Bidhannagar Mayor and senior Trinamool Congress leader Sabyasachi Dutta was arrested late Monday night in connection with an alleged extortion case involving more than ₹1 crore, police said.
According to officials, a local businessman had lodged a complaint alleging that Dutta demanded a substantial sum of money as extortion. Acting on the complaint, Bidhannagar North Police Station initiated an investigation and questioned him after preliminary evidence was gathered.
Police sources said Dutta was detained from his residence in Rajarhat on Monday night and taken to Bidhannagar North Police Station for interrogation. Following extended questioning, he was formally arrested after investigators claimed to have found sufficient evidence supporting the allegations.
He is currently in police custody, and a medical examination is scheduled for Tuesday morning before being produced in court.
Sabyasachi Dutta is a prominent political figure in the Bidhannagar region. He has previously served as the Mayor of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation and currently holds a key organisational position in the area. He was also a candidate from the Barasat constituency in the recent elections. Dutta has had a politically turbulent career, having earlier joined the Bharatiya Janata Party after leaving the Trinamool Congress, before eventually returning to his former party.
The arrest comes amid a series of recent legal actions against several Trinamool Congress leaders in the state. Earlier, former minister Sujit Bose and other political figures have also faced investigations and enforcement action, making Dutta’s arrest the latest in a string of high-profile developments in West Bengal politics.
