Havana, 09 June (H.S.): A powerful earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck off the western coast of Cuba on Monday, sending tremors across the island and into parts of the United States, including southern Florida.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred in waters west of the Cuban capital, Havana, at a depth of approximately 10 kilometres. The shaking was felt across several provinces, prompting residents to leave buildings and gather in open areas as a precaution.

Authorities reported no immediate casualties or significant structural damage following the quake. Emergency agencies continued monitoring the situation and assessing affected areas throughout Monday.

Residents in western Cuba described moments of anxiety as buildings swayed during the tremor. In the province of Pinar del Río, people rushed outdoors after feeling the ground shake, although local officials later confirmed that no serious incidents had been reported.

The earthquake's impact extended beyond Cuba. Meteorological authorities in Florida received multiple reports of shaking from residents in the southwestern part of the state, highlighting the reach of the seismic event across the Caribbean region.

Cuba is located in a seismically active zone influenced by the interaction of tectonic plates in the Caribbean. Earthquakes are relatively common in the region, particularly along fault systems surrounding the island. While Monday's quake did not trigger major damage, it served as a reminder of the area's vulnerability to seismic activity.

Scientists noted that the earthquake occurred in a region known for geological movement, although stronger earthquakes in the Caribbean have historically caused widespread damage and prompted regional alerts.

Authorities in Cuba continued to monitor the aftermath on Monday evening, while emergency services remained prepared to respond should aftershocks occur in the coming days.
