New Delhi, 09 June (H.S.):

The first export consignment of Assam’s renowned Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Tezpur litchi has been shipped to Dubai with the support of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). The initiative is expected to provide farmers with improved market access and better prices while strengthening global recognition for agricultural products from Northeast India.

According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, APEDA facilitated the export of the first consignment of GI-tagged Tezpur litchi from Assam to Dubai on June 7. The shipment marks a significant milestone in expanding international market access for agricultural produce from the northeastern region of India.

The ministry stated that the one-metric-ton consignment consisted of GI-certified Tezpur litchi, one of Assam’s most celebrated horticultural products. The fruit is renowned for its exceptional sweetness, vibrant red colour, distinctive aroma and superior flavour.

Several notable varieties of Tezpur litchi are cultivated in the region, including Bombaiya, Bilati, Elaichi, Piyaji and Sahi, all of which are highly valued for their unique taste and quality characteristics.

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal also welcomed the development, stating that Assam’s famous GI-tagged Tezpur litchi is now spreading its sweetness in international markets.

He noted that the first export consignment was dispatched to Dubai with APEDA’s support and expressed confidence that the initiative would enhance the global visibility of Tezpur litchi, enable farmers to secure better returns for their produce and create new opportunities for agricultural products from Northeast India.

The export is being viewed as an important step toward integrating the region’s unique agricultural produce into global supply chains while promoting India’s GI-tagged products in international markets.
