New Delhi, May 27 (H.S.): Former Indian shooter and Olympian Randhir Singh passed away in New Delhi on Wednesday morning at the age of 79. His demise has sent a wave of grief across the Indian sporting fraternity, particularly within the shooting community.

An Arjuna Award recipient, Randhir Singh played a significant role in Indian and Asian sports administration for several decades. He served as the Secretary General of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) from 1987 to 2012. In addition, he was a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from 2001 to 2014 and was later made an honorary member.

In September 2024, Randhir Singh created history by becoming the first Indian to be elected President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). He was elected for a four-year term until 2028 during the 44th OCA General Assembly held in New Delhi. However, due to deteriorating health, his tenure ended prematurely earlier this year.

Represented India in Five Olympic Games

Hailing from Patiala in Punjab, Randhir Singh belonged to a distinguished sporting family. He represented India in shooting at five Olympic Games. He also made history by winning India’s first-ever shooting gold medal at the Asian Games during the 1978 Bangkok Asian Games.

NRAI Expresses Deep Condolences

National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) Secretary Rajeev Bhatia issued a statement saying: “It is with profound sorrow that we share the news of the passing of Raja Randhir Singh on May 27, 2026. He was a great Olympian, Arjuna Awardee, and one of the most respected sports administrators in India, Asia, and the international Olympic movement.”

He further added:

“His contribution to the growth of shooting sports and the Olympic movement has been invaluable. The NRAI and the entire shooting fraternity mourn this irreparable loss and extend heartfelt condolences to his family.”
