New Delhi, May 27 (H.S.): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision declaring the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process completely valid, while also targeting the Congress party. The BJP said that along with working harder, the Congress also needs to engage in introspection. It termed the verdict a constitutional defeat for the Opposition and the Congress party.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters, Party MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said that the Supreme Court has today established the SIR process as fully constitutional. He stated that after suffering political defeat and moral defeat for allegedly attempting to create disorder and chaos in the country, the Opposition and the Congress party have now also faced defeat on constitutional grounds.
He said that all attempts to accuse and malign democratic institutions in order to conceal political incompetence have today failed before the Supreme Court. He added that the apex court has upheld the SIR process as constitutional and within the authority of the Election Commission. According to him, the court also described the process as necessary for ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections.
It is noteworthy that the Supreme Court on Wednesday declared the Special Intensive Revision process completely valid. Following the court’s verdict, the path has now been cleared for a special intensive review of electoral rolls in 19 states across the country.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi stated that the Election Commission has full authority under Article 324 of the Constitution and the Representation of the People Act, 1950, to examine, revise, and verify voter lists. Rejecting petitions challenging the SIR notification, the court clearly observed that clean, transparent, and updated electoral rolls are essential for strengthening democracy.
