Kathmandu, May 27 (H.S.): The investigation committee formed to probe allegations against former Nepal Home Minister Sudan Gurung has sent him a notice summoning him to record his statement. The committee is preparing to take Gurung’s statement on Wednesday and issued the formal notice on Tuesday directing him to appear before it.
Committee Chairman Achyut Prasad Bhandari said, “Reports related to stock exchanges, banks, and land holdings are being thoroughly examined as part of the investigation into allegations of disproportionate assets and illegal business activities involving former Home Minister Sudan Gurung. Once this process is completed, we will record his statement on Wednesday.” However, the committee acknowledged that there is still a need to obtain certain additional reports.
The government had constituted the three-member investigation committee on May 11 under the chairmanship of retired High Court judge Achyut Prasad Bhandari. The panel also includes Comptroller General Shobhakant Paudel and Deputy Attorney General Achyut Mani Neupane as members.
Gurung resigned from the post of Home Minister on April 22. Having assumed office as Home Minister on March 27, he became embroiled in controversy after details of his assets were made public. The disclosures reportedly indicated that he possessed land exceeding the legally permissible limit.
His alleged stake in a company linked to businessman Deepak Bhatt who is currently in custody on charges of amassing wealth through unlawful means has also come under suspicion. The committee is investigating these matters and is expected to submit its report to the government.
The committee, which began functioning around 10 days ago, has been directed to submit its findings to the government within 15 days.
