
New Delhi, May 27 (H.S.): Several senior Congress leaders on Wednesday paid floral tributes to India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, at Shantivan on the occasion of his death anniversary. During the tribute ceremony, the leaders remembered Nehru as the architect of modern India and recalled his visionary thinking, democratic values, and scientific temperament.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said that Pandit Nehru laid the foundation for strong democratic institutions and the making of modern India. He stated that the industrial, scientific, and educational institutions established under Nehru’s leadership gave a new direction to the country, and that his legacy continues to guide the nation even today. Kharge added that Nehru’s commitment to freedom, democracy, secularism, and scientific thinking remains deeply embedded in the soul of India.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi paid humble tributes to Pandit Nehru and said that he dedicated his entire life to building an inclusive, harmonious, and progressive India. Rahul Gandhi said that Nehru’s leadership, founded on freedom, democratic principles, constitutional rights, social justice, and scientific outlook, will continue to inspire generations.
Congress General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said that the true measure of any work lies in how many tears it wipes away and how many lives it brings happiness to. She said that Nehru believed the country could progress only when millions of people advanced and prospered together. Guided by this vision, he established major institutions related to education, healthcare, science, technology, industry, and agriculture, which strengthened India significantly.
Congress Organisation General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP K. C. Venugopal said that Nehru transformed a nation devastated by colonial rule into a strong and modern democratic republic. Senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor stated that Pandit Nehru’s life was dedicated to democracy, social justice, and secular pluralism, and that his legacy continues to provide direction to the country.
Congress leaders said that Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s contribution would always be remembered not only as the first Prime Minister of independent India, but also as the builder of modern India. Describing him as the “Jewel of India,” the leaders said he symbolized the values of truth, unity, and peace.
It is noteworthy that Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru passed away on May 27, 1964. He is remembered for introducing the Five-Year Plans, promoting the public sector, establishing scientific institutions, and strengthening democratic values in the country.
