Dhaka, May 27 (H.S.): A 47-kilometre-long traffic jam has persisted since Tuesday night on the Dhaka-Tangail-Jamuna Bridge Highway in Bangladesh. Police and Jamuna Bridge authorities said there was heavy vehicular pressure throughout the night in the Chandana area of Gazipur. Due to Eid-ul-Adha, people are trying to reach their destinations as quickly as possible. Long queues of vehicles are still visible on the highway. Continuous rainfall has further worsened the situation, while dozens of vehicles reportedly broke down midway.
According to a report by the *Dhaka Tribune*, the congestion has stretched from the Jamuna Bridge toll plaza to Gharinda in Tangail Sadar Upazila and from Natiapara to Gorai. People travelling home for the Eid holidays, particularly women, children, and elderly passengers, are facing severe hardship. Authorities stated that one-way traffic movement was introduced in two phases in an attempt to ease the pressure of vehicles. However, five vehicles broke down during the operation, aggravating the situation further.
Executive Engineer of the Jamuna Bridge Site Office, Syed Riazuddin, said the traffic congestion was caused by rainfall, excessive traffic pressure, and vehicles breaking down on the bridge. He stated, “We hope the situation will gradually improve as the day progresses.”
Tangail Superintendent of Police Mohammad Shamsul Alam Sarkar said that traffic pressure has remained consistently high on the Tangail section of the highway.
