Guwahati, 27 May (HS): Several BJP leaders and legislators on Wednesday strongly supported the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), terming it a historic and progressive step towards ensuring equal rights and justice for all citizens. The MLA's were talking to media persons in Assam assembly premises on Wednesday. The debate on the UCC is going on in assembly and the government is all set to pass it today.
Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika questioned the existence of laws that permit a man to marry four women without the consent of his wife. He stated that while Hindus can face imprisonment for having more than one wife, another section is allowed to practice polygamy and such “discriminatory and outdated” provisions should be abolished through the implementation of the UCC.
MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi described the decision to enforce the UCC as a welcome move, asserting that the law must remain equal for everyone. He said the UCC would ensure equal rights and justice for all communities.
MLA Pallab Lochan Das said the implementation of the UCC would mark the beginning of a new era for future generations and help build a more balanced and progressive society.
BJP leader Diplu Ranjan Sharma termed the day significant for BJP workers and claimed that the UCC would put an end to minority appeasement politics.
MLA Mrinal Saikia called the day historic and said the UCC would help end injustice and discrimination faced by Muslim women under existing personal laws.
Meanwhile, MLA Manab Deka alleged that the Opposition was opposing the UCC only to pursue appeasement politics targeting a particular community.----------
