

Bike-borne assailants opened fire on the policeman Amritsar, 24 May (H.S.): A Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) was shot dead by unidentified attackers in the Majitha area of Amritsar district on Sunday morning. The deceased has been identified as ASI Joga Singh, who was posted with the Traffic Police in Amritsar. According to information, ASI Joga Singh was travelling on his motorcycle to Amritsar for duty when the attack took place near village Hamza in Majitha. Two unidentified assailants riding a motorcycle allegedly intercepted him and opened fire. The attackers reportedly fired two bullets at the ASI, leaving him critically injured. He succumbed to his injuries on the spot before any medical assistance could reach him. After carrying out the attack, the assailants fled from the scene. The incident created panic in the area, while police teams rushed to the spot and launched an investigation.
Senior officers of Amritsar Rural Police, including SSP Suhail Mir, DSP Kamalmeet Singh and Majitha SHO Karam Pal Singh, reached the crime scene along with police teams. The area was cordoned off and forensic experts were called in to collect evidence. Police also recovered empty bullet shells from the spot.
Speaking on the incident, SSP ASR Rural Suhail Mir said that ASI Joga Singh, a resident of Ghanieke Bangar village in Batala, was on his way to Amritsar when he was attacked. Preliminary investigation suggests that the firing took place on a roadside stretch away from the main Batala-Majitha road. Police said the exact motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained. Investigators are examining all possible angles, including personal rivalry, targeted killing and road rage. The SSP stated that evidence is being collected and a detailed probe is underway to identify and arrest the accused.
