Chennai, 7 August (H.S.): Kamal Haasan's recent comments have ignited a fierce political row, but not about his remarks on Sanatan Dharma as the headline suggests. Instead, the controversy surrounds his comments about the Kannada language. During a promotional event for his film Thug Life in Chennai, Haasan claimed that Kannada was born out of Tamil, sparking widespread outrage in Karnataka.
The BJP and pro-Kannada groups were quick to condemn Haasan's statement, with Karnataka BJP chief BY Vijayendra demanding an unconditional apology. Disrespecting another language in the name of their mother tongue is nothing but uncultured behavior, Vijayendra stated, accusing Haasan of revealing his ungrateful personality. Pro-Kannada organizations, including the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, staged protests and threatened to boycott Haasan's film.
Karnataka's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also criticized Haasan, saying, Kannada has a very long history. Poor Kamal Haasan is unaware of it. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has taken a strong stance, banning the release of Thug Life in Karnataka until Haasan issues a public apology. Haasan, however, remains unapologetic, stating that he won't apologize if he's not wrong. It is a democracy. I believe in law and justice. My love for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala is true, he asserted.
The controversy has sparked a heated debate about language identity and cultural pride, with Haasan's comments being perceived as an attack on Kannada's heritage. As the situation unfolds, it's clear that the row over Haasan's comments will have significant repercussions for his film and his reputation in Karnataka.
