Hooghly, 19 July (H.S.): A shocking case of gang rape has come to light from Arambagh in West Bengal's Hooghly district. A young girl was allegedly gang-raped in a car by four men, while her younger sister was physically assaulted. The two sisters had reportedly gone out with the accused after connecting with one of them on social media. Following the incident, police have arrested three accused, while one remains absconding. All four hail from the Goghat area. The arrested men were produced before the Arambagh Sub-Divisional Court on Saturday.
According to the victims and their mother, the two sisters, who live in Arambagh, had gone for shopping on Thursday evening. Near Gourhati crossing, they encountered a young man they had befriended on social media. He invited them to join him and his friends for a drive. Initially hesitant, the sisters eventually agreed after being persuaded.
The four men took them on a drive in a four-wheeler. When the girls did not return for several hours, their worried family filed a missing report at Arambagh Police Station. Using mobile location the, police traced the sisters and rescued them from the Eklakhi area in Bardhaman district.
Upon returning home, the elder sister alleged that the men forcibly made them consume intoxicants inside the car. She was then gang-raped by all four men, while her younger sister was physically abused. Based on their statements, their mother filed a fresh complaint with Arambagh police.
Soon after the complaint, the accused attempted to flee. However, in a late-night raid on Friday, police arrested three of the four from the Naisharai area of Arambagh. One of the accused is still on the run.
The victims’ mother said, “They gang-raped my daughter and tortured her. As a mother, I demand nothing less than the death penalty for them.”
While taken to court on Saturday, the arrested men denied the charges, claiming that the sisters had demanded lakhs of rupees from them and were framing them for not paying.
The police have launched a thorough investigation, including examining CCTV footage and collecting other evidence to corroborate the allegations.
