-Pending cases of human rights violations related to the state to be heard
Delhi, 19 July (H.S.): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India will conduct a two-day Camp Sitting in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on July 21-22, to address cases of alleged human rights violations. NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian, along with members Justice (Dr.) Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi, Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, and Priyank Kanoongo, will begin hearings at 10.00 am at the State Guest House Unit V. Key NHRC officials, including Secretary General Shri Bharat Lal and Registrar (Law) Shri Joginder Singh, will also attend.
The Camp Sitting aims to not only hear cases but also educate officers about human rights while ensuring swift justice for victims. The Commission will engage with civil society representatives, NGOs, and Human Rights Defenders (HRDs). Present at the hearings will be state authorities and relevant complainants for immediate deliberation and resolution of cases, which include attacks on journalists and HRDs, crimes against women and children, medical neglect related to snake bites, flooding issues, and human rights abuses due to witchcraft accusations and child trafficking during the COVID-19 pandemic.
On the second day, the Commission will meet with civil society representatives to discuss outcomes and hold a media briefing to disseminate information regarding human rights issues in the state and actions taken by the NHRC. Since 2007, NHRC has organized camp sittings in various states across India.
