
Nagpur, 09 Dec (HS): Those selling banned Gutkha in
Maharashtra will face action under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime
Act (MCOCA), 1999. The proposal has been referred to the Law Department. With
the required amendments the law will be enforced. The traders will face a stern
action, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed the Legislative Assembly
The issue was raised by Prashant Thakur, Aslam Sheikh,
Abhimanyu Pawar, Raees Sheikh and Amin Patel relating to availability of Gutkha
in school, college areas.
Fadnavis informed the House the police have initiated
a drive against illegal sale of Gutkha. In Navi Mumbai 1,144, Ahilyanagar 185, Jalna 90, Akola 35, Nashik 131,
Chandrapur 230, Solapur 108, Buldana 664 cases have been registered and in
Nagpur and Yavatmal 1706 offences have been registered.
He emphasized the need for more rehabilitation centres
for the tobacco addict.
