New Delhi, 9 December (H.S.): National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairperson Justice V. Ram Subramanian has said that humanity today stands at a critical juncture, confronting multiple global challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, conflict, and terrorism. He emphasized the urgent need for solidarity that transcends borders and generations to safeguard the future of humankind.

Delivering a message to the nation on the eve of International Human Rights Day, Justice Ram Subramanian stated that human rights are the fundamental essentials of everyday life, granting every individual the freedom to speak, live with dignity, and dream without fear.

He urged people to come forward and stand united in defense of human rights. The NHRC chief noted that the commission, for over three decades, has remained at the forefront of promoting, protecting, and preserving human rights in India — especially those of marginalized and vulnerable sections of society.

“Inspired by the Constitution of India and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the Commission continues to uphold the values of equality, liberty, and human dignity for all,” he said.

Justice Ram Subramanian highlighted that December 10 marks World Human Rights Day, commemorating the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 by the United Nations. India, he recalled, had played a significant role in shaping this landmark document, embedding within it universal values of dignity, justice, and equality — principles deeply rooted in Indian civilization, ethics, and philosophy.

As the world grapples with intensifying humanitarian and environmental crises, the NHRC chairperson reinforced the need for collective responsibility and empathy, stating that “the defense of human rights is not the duty of institutions alone, but of every conscious citizen committed to peace, humanity, and coexistence.”
