NAYPYIDAW (Myanmar), 9 December (H.S.): A mild earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale struck Myanmar around 12:21 a.m. (IST) on Tuesday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), India. The tremor’s epicenter was located at a depth of 30 kilometers beneath the surface. This latest quake followed a series of minor tremors that shook the country on Monday, highlighting Myanmar’s geographic vulnerability to seismic activity.
The first quake, recorded at 10:18 a.m., measured 3.8 in magnitude at a depth of 80 kilometers, while another tremor struck at 3:46 p.m., measuring 3.5 in magnitude with a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.
Seismologists note that Myanmar lies at the confluence of four major tectonic plates—the Indian, Eurasian, Sunda, and Burma plates—making it one of the most earthquake-prone zones in Southeast Asia.
No casualties or significant structural damage have been reported so far. However, authorities are closely monitoring the situation due to the region’s heightened geological sensitivity.
