New Delhi, 9 December (H.S.): A Rouse Avenue Sessions Court on Tuesday issued notices to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and the Delhi Police in connection with a petition alleging irregularities in the inclusion of Gandhi’s name in the voter list in 1980.Special Judge Vishal Gogne directed that the case be listed for hearing on January 6, 2026.
The notice was issued while hearing a petition challenging the earlier order of a magistrate’s court that had dismissed a plea seeking registration of an FIR against Sonia Gandhi over the alleged manipulation of her name in the electoral roll.
The petition was filed by advocate Vikas Tripathi, who claimed that Sonia Gandhi’s name was included in the voter list in 1980, even though she had not yet acquired Indian citizenship at the time.
According to the petition, Gandhi became an Indian citizen only in 1983. It further alleged that her name was removed from the voter list in 1982 and re-added in 1983 after she formally obtained citizenship.
Tripathi’s petition stated that Sonia Gandhi had applied for Indian citizenship in April 1983, and therefore any inclusion of her name in the voter roll prior to that date could only have been done through falsified documents—constituting a cognizable offence.
The petitioner urged the court to order the registration of an FIR against Gandhi to investigate the alleged irregularities. The Rouse Avenue court was told that the magistrate’s court had neither issued a notice to Sonia Gandhi nor to the Delhi Police before dismissing the plea on September 11 this year.
The Sessions Court has now sought their responses before the next hearing scheduled for early January.
