Guwahati, 09 December (HS): The BJP on Tuesday asserted that under Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam’s identity, land and heritage remain fully protected. On the eve of Martyrs’ Day, the party paid tribute to the martyrs of the Assam Movement, calling their sacrifice an eternal inspiration.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, BJP spokesperson Kishor Bhattacharya said the newly built Martyrs’ Memorial at Boragaon—constructed on 116 bighas at a cost of ₹100 crore—stands as a symbol of Assamese pride and sacrifice. He accused the then Congress Government of unleashing brutal repression during the movement, resulting in 860 deaths and thousands injured.
Bhattacharya further alleged that while people demanded the deportation of foreigners, the Congress secretly facilitated the settlement of doubtful foreigners for its political gain. He said the Congress can never wash away the stigma of betraying the indigenous people of Assam.-----------
