Chennai, 7 December (H.S.) : Chennai experienced significant travel disruption as IndiGo cancelled 100 flights in a single day, marking the sixth consecutive day of widespread chaos.
This ongoing wave of cancellations is rooted in a severe staff shortage at the airline, exacerbated by newly imposed duty-time restrictions on airline crews, making it difficult for the carrier to adequately staff its scheduled services.
The disruption has left numerous passengers with confirmed tickets stranded, prompting arguments with IndiGo staff at Chennai airport over last-minute notifications and poor communication.
The cascading effect of the cancellations has also caused airfares on competing airlines to surge up to five times their standard price. The issue has drawn national attention, leading to intervention by the Union government.
Officials anticipate that the situation will begin to stabilise soon, with temporary relaxation of duty-time restrictions for staff. Normal flight schedules are expected to start resuming within the next 24 hours, with full normalisation projected within three days.
