NAIROBI, Kenya, 2 November (H.S.): A devastating landslide, caused by heavy rainfall, struck western Kenya overnight on Saturday, November 1, 2025, resulting in at least 21 fatalities and leaving more than 30 people unaccounted for, according to the country's interior minister. The landslide occurred in Marakwet East, a region currently in its rainy season.
Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed the death toll on social media and noted that search and rescue operations were temporarily halted for the night. The Kenyan Red Cross has been actively involved, sharing aerial images that reveal extensive mudslides and flash flooding across the area. The organization is working with the government to coordinate rescue efforts, which include air evacuations for the injured.
However, rescue operations face significant challenges, as access to some of the affected areas remains extremely difficult due to flooding and blocked routes, the Red Cross stated. This is not the first time the area has experienced such a tragedy; previous deadly landslides occurred in 2010 and 2012. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable locations to evacuate as heavy rains are expected to continue.
