Malda, 2 November (H.S.): Former Farakka MLA and Trinamool Congress leader Moinul Haque passed away early Sunday morning. He had been ill for the past few months. He suffered a heart attack in September and was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata. He breathed his last on Sunday morning.
Moinul Haque began his political career with the Congress Party. He became active in politics as a student leader and was first elected MLA from the Farakka Assembly constituency in 1996 on a Congress ticket. He subsequently won this seat five consecutive times. He was always one of the prominent faces of the opposition camp in the Assembly.
While in the Congress party, he became a member of the AICC (All India Congress Committee) and also served as the observer for the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress for a long time.
However, he lost the 2021 Assembly elections to Trinamool Congress candidate Monirul Islam. That same year, he resigned from the Congress party, writing a letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi. He then joined the Trinamool Congress, publicly joining the party at a rally organized by Abhishek Banerjee.
After joining the Trinamool Congress, he was appointed vice-president of the state Trinamool Congress. The passing of this experienced and popular leader on Sunday morning has sent shockwaves through political circles in Malda district.
