Mamata hails the role of armed forces, forgetting her old remarks
Kurseong(Darjeeling)/Kolkata, Apr.12 (HS): West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee who raised a nationwide uproar last month for raising questions about the truth behind the Balakot air strike by IAF and wanted to know the number of dead terrorists there, however, today extented her full support to the armed forces and described them as the ''pride of the nation''. Addressing an election rally at popular tourist resort Kurseong in Dajeeling hills today, the chief minister in an obvious and complete turnaround from her previous remarks hailed the efforts of the armed forces in defending the international borders of the country and upholding the country''s sovereignty and said ''we are proud of them''. But not stopping at that, she also referred to a controversial letter, allegedly written by a section of former army officers requesting the President and Supreme Commander Ram Nath Kovind to take steps to prevent the alleged politicisation of the Armed forces, and claimed that she always opposed any comment to drag the army into Politics. Without realizing the controversy surrounding the ''truth'' behind the letter which had already been criticised and opposed by several former Chiefs of Staff and other senior Army officers, she in her usual criticism tried to drag the name of the Prime minister in to the controversy and urged the people not to cast their votes in favour of any BJP candidate anywhere. Referring to TMC candidate for Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat Amar Singh Rai, a former Gorkha Janmukti Morcha(GJM)) legislator from Kurseong as the ''Son of the Soil'', the Chief minister ridiculed the BJP nominee Raju Sing Bista for allegedly being a non resident of Darjeeling.''Like the outgoing MP Surinder Singh Ahluwalia, the new BJP candidate, if elected, would not visit the hills anymore and would stay back in New Delhi to look after his business there'', she said and sought the support of residents of Darjeeling hill areas for Rai . Incidentally, Darjelling Lok Sabha constituency would go the polls on 18 April with TMC candidate Rai getting the support from GJM and its current leader Binay Tamang, while his main rival and the BJP nominee Bista would be supported by the GNLF and the GJM faction led by its former leader Bimal Gurung making the battle between the two very intense and interesting. Though Congress and the Cpi-m have also put up their candidates, they are no longer in the race for the seat because of lack of support among the voters both in the hills and in the plains, political observers here feel.
