Kirti Azad to campaign from April 12 at Dhanbad
Patna, Apr 10 (HS): Former Test cricket player, Kirti Azad, who has been nominated as Congress candidate from Dhanbad in Jharkhand, will start campaign from Friday. Kirti was elected twice from Darbhanga to Lok Sabha on BJP ticket. He had joined the Congress last month. He will face the sitting BJP MP, P N Singh from Dhanbad who had been elected twice - 2009 and 2014. He has claimed that he has Jharkhand connections as he was born at Godda in Santhal Parganas and had served in the Steel Authority of India (SAIL) limited at Bokaro for 12 years. Bokaro district is also part of Dhanbad Lok Sabha constituency. Chandrashekhar Dubey, a Congress MLA was also an aspirant from Dhanbad. He had represented Dhanbad in Lok Sabha by defeating the then BJP candidate, Prof Rita Verma, widow of the then SP of Dhanbad, Randhir Verma, who was gunned down by Khalistani militants. Verma had challenged them at Bank More, where they had come to loot a nationalised bank''s branch. Ms Verma later became minister of state for coal in Atal Bihari Vajpayee led government. Kirti may get support from the former BJP MP as she had rebelled against the sitting BJP MP and alleged PN Singh was a corrupt leader who did not develop the constituency. Underground fire raging in Jharia is one of the major election issues in Dhanbad, besides drinking water shortage. Dhanbad is the headquarters of the Bharat Coking Coal Limited and IIT (ISM) is stationed there. The central fuel and mining research institute is also at Dhanbad, which is called the coal capital of India. Hindusthan Samachar/Law Kumar Mishra/Shri Ram Shaw\
