US District Judge blocks Trump's policy of returning asylum seekers to Mexico
Los Angeles, Apr 09 (HS): A US District Judge Richard Seeborg blocked President Donald Trump''s policy of returning asylum seekers to Mexico to wait out the processing of their cases, saying the Department of Homeland Security had overstepped its authority. The ruling by US District Judge Richard Seeborg in San Francisco marked a rebuke for the Trump administration''s efforts to stop the flow of migrants seeking asylum through the US border with Mexico. The decision, which goes into effect on Friday, also comes just days after outgoing Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen had vowed to expand the controversial program. Several hundred people seeking asylum have been returned to Mexico to await the outcome of their request under the policy first implemented in January at the San Ysidro port of entry in California and later extended to Calexico, a second California border point, and El Paso, Texas. The ruling removes at least temporarily a controversial Trump administration strategy aimed at slowing a flood of immigrants, many of them families from Central America, that swelled last month to the highest level in a decade. Because of limits on how long children are legally allowed to be held in detention, many of the families are released to await US immigration court hearings, a process that can take years because of ballooning backlogs. In response, the Trump administration in January started sending some migrants to wait out their US court dates in Mexican border cities, under a policy known as Migrant Protection Protocols, or MPP. The judge said that the government shall permit the 11 plaintiffs in the case to enter the United States beginning on Sunday. He added that the government still retained the right to detain the asylum-seekers pending the outcome of their case. Hindusthan Samachar/Radha/Ram \
