Kolkata, Apr 05 (HS): Continuing their fight against black money, Income Tax department officials here recovered huge unaccounted cash, amounting to more than Rs 4.5 crores, from a building at the city''s main business hub Burrabazar area last night, raising the question of the role of black money during the coming elections in West Bengal. Sources at the Income Tax department told Hindusthan Samachar here today that acting on specific information a team of IT officials conducted a raid at a multi storied building at Maharshi Debendra Thakur road inside Burrabazar business hub last night and recovered Rs 4.5 crores of the denominations of Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 notes from inside a room. A number of torn notes of much smaller denominations were also recovered and seized from the spot, the sources informed and claimed that such torn notes were commonly used for hawala transactions and apprehended that the huge amount of money was to be dispatched through such transactions. Three people who were present in the room during the raid, were arrested on charge of possessing Black money, the sources said and informed that efforts were on to nab the kingpins of the Hawala gang and the owner of the house. It may be stated that since the elections were announced on 10 March, the Income Tax and Customs Department officials have been leaving no stone unturned to seize huge amounts of unaccounted cash, gold bars, gold biscuits and even gold ornaments from different parts of the city and elsewhere in the state. So far a total amount of over Rs 250 crores worth of cash and such precious metals have been recovered from various places, the sources said and confirmed that similar raids would be conducted till the elections were over. Only yesterday an illegal gun factory with some semi finished arms were also unearthed at the city''s famous IT hub at Rajarhat, causing causing concern to the administration.
