Calcutta HIgh Court directs TMC MP's wife to appear before excise officials
Kolkata, Apr.4 (HS): Calcutta High court today directed the wife of Trinamool,Congress MP Avishek Banerjee to appear before the Central Custom and Excise Department officials on 8 April to reply to their queries in connection with some ''misinformation'' in her PAN card application and other documents. It may be recalled that the Custom and Excise Department sent a notice to Ruchira Narula, the wife of TMC MP, asking her to appear before them on 8th April in person to explain why she had decided to hide true information about her personal data while applying for a PAN card a few years ago. But instead of accepting the notice, she decided to seek shelter from the court and filed a case in Calcutta High Court challenging the Department''s notice. In her petition Narula also charged the Excise Officials at Dum Dum Airport with allegedly misbehaving with her on her return to the city from Bangkok after Medical check ups late last month. But today when the case came up for hearing, Justice Rajarshi Varadwaj after listening both the counsels directed the wife of the Trinamool Youth Congress President and Lok Sabha MP from Diamond Harbour to appear before the department officials as sought by them on 8 April in view of the seriousness of the issue. The Judge also did not impose any restriction on the possibility of stern measures by Excise officials on Ruchira Narula, if necessary. In their complaints the Excise Department alleged that Mrs Narula had deliberately suppressed information about her Thailand Passport, issued in Bangkok before her marriage with Banerjee in 2013, and that she also did not inform that she also possesed the Overseas Citizen Card while applying for PAN card in India. Despite being a bonafied citizen of Thailand she had filled the form 49- A for PAN card fully knowing that the same was required for the Indian citizens only, the Excise department in its complaints said. It may also be recalled that Narula''s name came up in news a few days ago after she and her lady companion were intercepted by the custom officials at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (Dum Dum) Airport on her arrival from Bangkok following a tip off that she was carrying unaccounted gold weighing about two kgs. But before she was properly frisked, senior officials of the city police reached the spot and took her away ignoring the opposition from the excise officials causing huge resentments among all sections of people against such unprecedented intervention of the city police and preventing government officials from performing their duty. Now it remains to be seen how the directive of Calcutta High Court would be dealt with by the TMC MP,who even threatened to quit politics if even two kilograms of gold were found from the possesion of his wife and that his wife was innocent of all counts.
