Twelve BJP workers injured in attacks on way to PM's Brigade rally
Khatra (Bankura)/Kolkata, Apr 03 (HS): At least 12 BJP workers were injured, some of them critically, when a group of armed people, believed to be Trinamool Congress supporters, attacked them with sticks and iron rods at Khatra crossing, about 50 km from Bankura town, this morning in a desperate bid to prevent them from attending Prime Minister Narendra Modi''s rally at the Brigade Parade Ground. According to reports reaching the state police headquarters at Lalbazar in Kolkata, as about 150 to 200 BJP workers from Bankura left for Kolkata early this morning in two buses to attend the PM''s rally here, they came under attack from a group of armed miscreants as the buses reached Khatra crossing. Armed with sticks and iron rods the unidentified miscreants not only damaged both the buses and broke their front window panes and deflated tyres, they also attacked the hapless BJP workers injuring at least 12 of them, some seriously. But when some local people, attracted by the shouts for help from BJP workers, rushed to assist the victims, the attackers fled in several motorbikes. Soon the injured were taken to a nearby health centre where they were given first aid before recommending several of them to the district hospital as their condition deteriorated. But despite the attacks the BJP workers left for the Prime Minister''s rally hiring some other vehicles, the party sources said. After learning the news of the attack, BJP West Bengal state President Dilip Ghosh severely condemned the incident and demanded immediate action by the district police to nab the culprits. ''We knew that the ruling party workers would resort to such dastardly act to prevent our party workers from attending the Prime Minister''s rally. But despite their all out attempts over a million people would attend today''s rally at the Brigade Parade Ground'', Ghosh said. Meanwhile, thousands of BJP workers and party supporters have started arriving in this City of Joy since last night to listen to Prime Minister Modi at his rally here today. According a rough estimate over two lakh people have already reached the venue following their arrivals in trains and buses from almost all South Bengal districts including those from Murshidabad, Bankura, Birbhum, Nadia, Burdwan, Purulia, Jhargram and Midnapore. Adequate arrangements have also been made by the party to provide them with food and night shelter at several camps in the city. Similar reports of huge attendance are also coming from Siliguri where the Prime Minister is scheduled to address his first election rally in Bengal this afternoon.
